Passport Description: The Japanese surprise air attack on Pearl Harbor left the Pacific Fleet in smoldering heaps of broken, twisted steel. In hours, 2,390 people were dead, half of these casualties from the battleship Arizona. American's involvement in World War II began on this day.

Passport Description: The forest along Redwood Creek in today's Muir Woods was spared from logging because it was hard to reach. Redwood Creek contained one of the San Francisco Bay Area's last uncut stands of old-growth redwood when Congressman William Kent bought 295 acres here for $45,000 in 1905.

Passport Description: Fort Point was constructed between 1853 and 1861 and occupied throughout the Civil War to prevent entrance of a hostile fleet into San Francisco Bay. During World War II, about 100 soldiers occupied Fort Point as part of the protection of the entrance to the Bay.
